logoDear Special Friends of SAFY-

The month of May is our special time to recognize the amazing work our foster parents do on a daily basis with our children. A SAFY foster parent is unlike any other parent. A SAFY parent has to embody special characteristics and go through specialized training to understand how to help our children heal. A SAFY parent has to have compassion, empathy, patience, and a nurturing disposition. A SAFY parent understands that his or her foster child comes from a place of hurt and pain. A SAFY parent takes time to build trust, believes in endless teaching possibilities, and will patiently wait for a SAFY child to return love. A SAFY parent sees the good in each child. Our SAFY foster parents are very special!  Not only are our parents an important piece to making our kids successful, but our special friends of SAFY too. Due to your generous giving and support to SAFY of NV you provide special opportunities for our foster parents to extra spoil our kids!

Sincerely-

Kristin Weckesser

SAFY Parent’s Shout Outs!

May is National Foster Care Month. The best foster parents are SAFY Parents! Many SAFY parents took time out to finish the two statements below…. Enjoy!!

I’m a SAFY foster parent because………

…”he tells me daily that he loves me,” Jesus Calleros.

……”I’m making a difference in a child who has been removed, It’s gratifying to see how love, peace an tranquility can help a child,”  Elsa Samuel.

….”I love children, I have the compassion, patience and nurturing to make he difference in a child. I love increasing my knowledge and passing it onto the children in my home,”  Alga & Sam Smith.

….”of the consistent support I receive from the SAFY staff,” Alex Bernal.

….”I always wanted to help kids. If my parents weren’t able to care for me or I couldn’t care for my daughter, I would want someone who could fill the gap with love and nurturing,”  Marti Brown.

…”I’m committed to assisting children, families, and team members at SAFY with the best guided practices in mentoring at risk youth and developing long term goals of success,”  Tamela Fahie.

…”these are children in the most need, where I can do he most good,” Steve Hamilton.

…”the experience in life with foster care is valuable, foster parents are heroes. Foster parents where invisible caps. Foster parents suit up everyday and show up for our children. Foster children need love, kindness, understanding, wisdom, and patience. Foster children are looking for capes because the capes are invisible, but the parent has arms to hold and comfort each child,”  Patricia Jackson.

….”we believe that treatment children are far more likely to be bounced around when they are put in traditional foster home, where specialized training has not been provided to deal with diagnosed children. If my husband and I could just help one treatment child get trough this tough time in their life, then we have been blessed,’ Elena & Russell Milano.

My foster/adoptive child is special because…..

….he has been through so much trauma and he is still the cheerleader of the house,” Eric & Nelson Center.

….he came at the right time for my husband and me. He gave us what we were lacking, a son of our own. We love that he appreciates and loves us,” Jean & Vernon Hix.

….they are so loving and trusting. They brighten or days with their laughter and make us proud of their progress,” Patricia & Robert Garcia.

The Heart of a SAFY Child

One day, a little girl named Jewel aged 7, overheard her SAFY caseworker talking about a donation that was made to SAFY of NV. Jewel has always been a very giving and caring girl. She is always concerned about others and loves helping whenever she can. Jewel insisted on helping SAFY of NV too! Jewel quickly disappeared to only re-emerge with a little heart filled with all of her savings of forty cents and a letter to SAFY. SAFY of NV is very proud of Jewel. This is just one of many examples on how great our kids are at SAFY of NV.

There’s a new PR worker in our neighborhood!

My name is Kelsie Fahr and new to the North office, but not new to SAFY of NV. I have worked for Second Start as a PSR worker for almost two years before transferring to the foster care side of SAFY. I’m an extremely energetic  and athletic person who enjoys working with kids.

The High Roller: Vegas Attraction With Best View of the Strip

High Roller

THE MOST EXCITING LAS VEGAS ATTRACTION TO HIT THE STRIP

Shining bright on the Las Vegas Strip, the 550-foot-tall High Roller is the world’s largest observation wheel.

This stunning Las Vegas attraction provides tourists and locals alike the ride of a lifetime. The epic wheel is the crown jewel of The LINQ, the Strip’s all-new outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment district. The High Roller has 28 spherical, Italian-handcrafted glass-enclosed cabins, each weighing 44,000 pounds. Passengers can enjoy breathtaking Las Vegas views in a 30-minute ride, the time it takes for the entire wheel to rotate. Additionally, there are two booths per cabin.

Each stylish, modern-styled cabin holds up to 40 people, totaling 1,120 at full capacity. Whether renting out a cabin for wedding, private party or flying solo, each 44,000-pound pod features dynamic music and video shows as riders take in the 360-degree sights. There’s also an adjacent wheelhouse where guests can reserve private parties and banquets.

A SPECTACULAR YEAR-ROUND LAS VEGAS LIGHT SHOW

Parallel to Las Vegas Boulevard, the massive wheel dazzles with more than 2,000 LED lights and serves as The LINQ’s sparkling focal point. The ever-changing colors are such a beauty and display a nightly glorious light show. The lights turn on starting at dusk and stay on until early morning. Lights range from bright pink, turquoise, purple, green and white, as well as color combinations. If you’re not busy admiring the scenery, each cabin comes equipped with eight monitor screens playing video and music shows.

The High Roller and accompanying LINQ district maintain Las Vegas as a forward-thinking destination. Together, they offer the most exciting range of entertainment, dining, retail and nightlife offerings in the world.

Tickets can be bought individually or in groups. Groups of 10 or more receive discounted rates.

EXPERT TIPS:

  • If you’re all about sightseeing, book your ride right at sunset or nighttime – the Vegas lights are out of this world. Also, don’t be afraid to ride during summer days – the cabins offer air-conditioning.
  • The High Roller’s wheelhouse sells drinks from its bar. Feel free to bring it with you on the wheel.
  • Save time – The LINQ’s valet is right by the High Roller. If you’re driving east on Flamingo (away from the Strip), turn left LINQ Lane and drive straight. It will be right before The Quad’s back entrance.
  • Stick around before or after your High Roller experience – The LINQ offers plenty to see and do, from musical acts at Brooklyn Bowl to amazing drink concoctions at Yard House and BLVD. Cocktail.
  • Memorialize your experience – The High Roller features a gift shop at the base of the wheel, including everything from T-shirts, key chains and other fun souvenirs.

Melinda Rhodes,

LCSW, Treatment Director of Clinical Services and Leslie Hansen, MSW, CSW Intern

Child Abuse affects thousands of children each year. It is our responsibility to be the voice for our children. As caseworkers, therapists, foster parents, clergy and professionals we have taken an oath to protect and report if we suspect a child is being abused or neglected. Many times people will ignore and not want to be involved, that is not an option. Not reporting abuse or neglect is punishable by law and a person can serve prison time and large fines if found guilty. If you suspect someone  abusing or neglecting a child and you are unsure, please discuss with your supervisor, pastor or colleague, seek advice, don’t ignore it! To prevent, we have to speak. Below are some guidelines to help you determine if you need to call Child Protective Services.

·  What do we report?

ANYTHING that we think is abuse.

In Nevada, abuse or neglect of a child means physical and mental non-accidental injury; sexual abuse or sexual exploitation; or negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child under age of 18 caused or allowed by a person responsible for his welfare.

·  When do we report it?

NOW…even if it’s something that happened in the past.

Example: If a foster parent just received a new placement and after a month, the child started to discuss with the foster parent that he or she was sexually abused three months ago, you MUSTreport it. There is no limitation of time.

Child Protective Services(CPS) 702-399-0081 has a quick and easy online reporting system so you don’t have to wait on hold.

AIDS WALK LAS VEGAS 2014

TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

WHY WALK?

HIV/AIDS is EVERYONE’s public health issue.  AIDS Walk Las Vegas is Nevada’s most significant fundraising event in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It funds supportive services designed to stabilize and empower clients living with or affected by HIV, including:

  • Guiding our clients through our referral and monitoring programs
  • Connecting clients with HIV specialists in various fields of medicine
  • Prevention education, including weekly seminars for clients and providers, as well as community outreach initiatives
  • Taxi vouchers and bus passes for transportation to healthcare providers
  • Rent and utility assistance
  • Nutritional counseling, food vouchers, and dietary supplements for those affected by weight-loss due to HIV progression
  • Kids’ program that ensures children affected by HIV enjoy a sense of normalcy

All AFAN programs are designed to eliminate fear, prejudice, and the stigma associated with the disease.

Join Grand Marshals Penn & Teller – along with local celebrities, businesses and community leaders – in making this a Las Vegas-style landmark event in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

For AFAN’s 30th anniversary, Penn & Teller are challenging walkers to raise at least $250. If you achieve this minimum goal, Penn and Teller will match your fundraising dollar for dollar!* If you want a shot at doubling your contribution, join the Penn & Teller Challenge when you register!

*Penn & Teller Challenge donations will be matched until the maximum amount is reached.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Last year, more than 12,000 people walked with us to raise awareness for the cause. We invite you to walk with your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, or alongside the thousands of other members of our community who come together to show their support.

Every donation counts, no matter the amount. Our online registration website has great fundraising ideas to help get you started, or you may share your unique idea(s) to help motivate and inspire others to reach their goals.  Aim high and be creative, passionate and persistent – your success may surprise you!  Invite your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to join you and/or sponsor you for AIDS Walk Las Vegas. Also, many companies will match your contributions through a Matching Gift Program. Check with your employer and encourage your donors/sponsors to do the same.

Although medical advances have improved and prolonged many people’s lives over the last few decades, the need for AFAN’s services continues to be crucial. In 1984, the founders of AFAN did not imagine that there would still be a need to advocate for our clients 30 years later. So much has been accomplished of which we should all be proud, yet as we know, there is still much to be done.  Your support, hard work and generosity will allow us to continue our mission.

LGBT activists: Nevada is ‘very smart’ to stop defending marriage equality ban in court (via Raw Story )

Pride Guide Arizona Wedding & Honeymoon Expo

Pride Guide Arizona & GayArizona.com is prepared for the increase of Gay Weddings with an LGBT Wedding Expo and the first print Gay Wedding Resource section in its magazine.

Phoenix, June 26th, 2013–  Same-sex weddings and commitment ceremonies are on the rise.  It’s predicted that LGBT weddings will add an expected $17 billion to the already $70 billion industry. That makes for an almost 25% increase in wedding related purchases. New York City’s economy increased by $259 Million during the first year after New York legalized gay marriage.

Pride Guide Arizona, the first publication to produce a LGBT wedding guide for Arizona, is proud to announce its first annual Wedding & Honeymoon Expo to be held September 15th, 2013.    “There is a major increase of engagements in the Arizona LGBT Community just in the last year, and now with the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA and Prop 8 there are going to be more weddings”   Said The Pride Guide Publisher Michael McFall.  No matter if the couple travels out of state to California, Washington, Colorado or Hawaii to get married they are having their reception back in Arizona.   So they are in need of services, locations etc..

So The Pride Guides felt to help its readers who are planning that special day, by providing an LGBT friendly wedding & honeymoon expo.  Thus eliminating the fear of discrimination or being turned down by a wedding service provider because of their personal beliefs.  “We have found an amazing amount of LGBT friendly wedding service providers who really want to serve our community but did not have a source to reach out to the LGBT Community.” Stated McFall “ We are the engine to help these providers reach the market in print, online and now an Expo”

One exciting giveaway for attendees at the expo is a chance to win a trip to Hawaii and 5 nights in Maui provided by Hawaiian Airlines and Maui Sunseeker Resort.

For more information on being a part of the Pride Guide Arizona Magazine or the Wedding Expo contact The Pride Guides office at 602-466-2501 or Arizona@ThePrideGuides.com
