Nevada Assembly Committee Continues Momentum for Same-Sex Marriage

The Nevada State Assembly Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections heard testimony yesterday on SJR13, legislation that would begin the multi-year process of placing on the 2016 ballot a question to repeal Nevada’s current ban on same-sex marriage and replace it with a law granting marriage equality to all Nevadans. The deadline for the bill to pass out of committee is May 17.

With several supportive senators and assembly people by her side, Republican Assemblywoman, Michelle Fiore provided moving testimony about her openly lesbian mother and her Chief of Staff and his partner of over 30 years and why they deserve the freedom to marry the person they love.

Earlier this month, the Nevada State Senate approved SJR13 by a vote of 12 to 9 with one Republican, Ben Kieckhefer, siding with the Democratic majority. If this bill is approved by the state legislature this year, and in the next legislative session in 2015, a question will appear on the 2016 ballot where Nevadan’s will have the opportunity to honor the thousands of loving, committing couples and allow marriage equality in the state.
